Tisha Campbell and Duane Martin Messy Divorce Explored

Tisha Campbell and Duane Martin’s divorce was a shock to many. The couple seemed like they would go the distance, but unfortunately, the love was just not strong enough after so many years of marriage. The pair have since moved on with their respective lives and careers, but the road to separation has not been a walk in the park. So what happened to the Martin family?

When the pair announced their plans to separate in 2018, it shocked fans. Reports claim they have been apart much longer than that and just trying to figure out if they could fix it. A source close to the family told PEOPLE that it was getting “harder and harder for them for the last two years. But it just got to the breaking point recently.” The source claimed that the pair considered doing a “conscious uncoupling,” which meant ending this with respect and compassion. However, Tisha claims it became too hard, and divorce was the only option.

By 2019, things got really ugly, and Duane began to claim that Tisha was suffering from mental issues. He said Campbell had a severe mental breakdown in 2017 that left her paranoid and anxious. They mentioned that her emotions were so unstable that they had to continue taking breaks throughout their deposition because of her outbursts. Tisha’s team fired back and claimed Duane was gaslighting her.

The divorce was finalized in 2020, and Tisha dropped “Martin” from her last name professionally. The couple, which had filed for bankruptcy prior to their divorce, ended with joint custody of their youngest son and not paying each other any spousal or child support. Reportedly money issues played a huge role in their split. “What’s the straw that broke the camel’s back? I don’t know, but I know that with their schedules and money issues, it all played into it,” a source told news outlets.

Campbell would channel her experience into her work on the series Uncoupled, which centers around the end of a relationship. Campbell says the biggest lesson she needed to learn was who she was outside of her relationship with Duane. “Going through and navigating and rediscovering one’s self outside of the labels is one of the most devastating things one can go through in a relationship.” She claims she lost friends but found solace in her family.

Since the split, Campbell has been working hard. In 2018 she starred in the films Blindspotting and The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar, followed by The J Team and Every Breath She Takes in 2021 and 2023. Over on TV, she continues to thrive as well. The former star of Martin and My Wife and Kids rebounded into such shows as Empire and Grey’s Anatomy the year she announced her split.

Since the official divorce completion in 2020, she has starred in Outmatched, Inside Job, the previously mentioned Uncoupled, and most recently, Act Your Age. The star has also been doing a lot more work with Tichina Arnold. In addition to hosting the Soul Train Awards the last few years, the ladies have also been prepping for a talk show.
