Sonya and Dell Curry Were Married 33 Years
Sonya Alicia Curry and Dell Curry are the parents of NBA star Steph Curry. The pair also have son Seth Curry, another NBA star, and a daughter named Sydel. Dell and Sonya met at Virginia Tech in the ’80s and bonded over their love of sports. Sonya was popular on the volleyball team, while Dell was well on his way to becoming an NBA star and actually caught Sonya’s eye while practicing with the school’s team. They would marry in 1988. Dell began his NBA career in 1986 and played till 2002. During that time, Sonya raised their boys to follow in their father’s footsteps. Since his retirement, Dell has been a color commentator for the Charlotte Hornets television broadcast, while Sonya runs a Christian Montessori School in Charlotte.
As Steph became a star in the NBA, Sonya would often go viral for her incredible enthusiasm on the sidelines, cheering on her boy.

After 33 years of marriage, Sonya and Dell decided it might be time to separate. Initially, the married couple took a trial break that lasted about a year to see if things could mend between them. The couple initially alleged that there was some infidelity between them. The divorce filings state that Sonya was having an affair at the time of the divorce but that Dell has cheating repeatedly throughout the relationship. Sonya has been shedding some light on the split during her book tour for her memoir Fierce Love. While talking with Tamron Hall, Sonya explained how difficult it has been for her to see their kids saddened with their choice. “I know that this isn’t something easy for anybody. This is a hard thing. And to feel like you cause other people pain in any situation is difficult,” she said.
Sonya has been very thankful to her kids, particularly Steph, who she says has given her a lot of grace during this time as she sorts through her emotions and what to do next. Dell Curry has been mostly silent about the split.
Steph Curry Wanted To Be Upset About His Parent’s Divorce
In an interview with The Ringer, Steph Curry admitted that he was struggling with his parent’s split despite being married with his own family. He confessed that while initially he wanted to be upset with them and question their decision, he also understood that they both had to do what was best for them. Steph also thanked his parents for the way they raised him because he said it helped him come to terms with their divorce easier. “It’s going to be an acknowledgment of both of y’all in terms of how y’all raised me. The calmness I have in myself is because of y’all.”

Sonya Curry’s memoir had really great timing as she was able to use it to further bring people into her world. She has confessed in some interviews that she did not think there was much to divulge due to how open her family is; but she does take the opportunity to expand on things like her relationships before meeting Dell and how she almost terminated Steph’s pregnancy. Sonya says that she and Dell were always very transparent with their children and tried to use everything as a teaching opportunity for them. The book mainly focuses on how proud she is of the values she was able to pass on to their kids and how in turn, their kids have used those values to give their parents grace through their separation.

Internet sleuths posted side-by-side pictures of Dell’s girlfriend and Sonya’s boyfriend with a family picture that proves they were happily married before, much like Dell and Sonya. It is unclear how serious these relationships are and if they began before the divorce, but a lot of people are confused and compare them to famous swingers like Will and Jada.
