Cancel culture might be here to attempt to eradicate many things of the past, but Marlon Wayans refuse to let them stop White Chicks 2 from happening. The legendary entertainer is in talks to deliver the sequel/ However, what Marlon Wayans will not allow, is for cancel culture to deter the movie from coming to life.
White Chicks debuted on the big screen in 2004. The film was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and created along with Shawn and Marlon Wayans, who also starred in the movie. Its premise is based on two brothers in the law enforcement field who have to go undercover to thwart a kidnapping from happening. In order to successfully do so, Shawn and Marlon Wayans’ characters had to transform into white women to capture the criminals.
After White Chicks was released, critics bombarded it with negative reviews. The film was even nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards (or “Razzies”) that year, including for Worst Picture. However, White Chicks proved to be a major success at the box office, raking in over $100 million. Fans worldwide supported the movie in droves, and their support, plus the film’s success, brought talks of a possible sequel.
The impact of White Chicks has lasted for many years. Marlon Wayans recently gave insight into how the film was created along with his brother, Shawn. The multifaceted entertainer shared a tidbit that the film’s characters were inspired by none other than Paris Hilton.
According to a June 2021 Instagram post, Marlon Wayans received an early morning call from his brother with an idea to do White Chicks, which he initially did not understand. However, he soon began to see how Paris Hilton and her sister held a grip on pop culture. Marlon Wayans labels Hilton “muses” and the “original ‘white chick.'”
The film has also often become utilized as a means for many conservatives to deflect from issues like Blackface, even before cancel culture became a thing. Due to the Wayans Brothers using makeup to become white women, many conservative Americans have stated that the film includes racist themes against white people.
Shawn Wayans appeared on The Clay Cane Show on SiriusXM in December of 2020 to defend their decision and speak against those who labeled the film racist. The Scary Movie actor expressed that those who have issues with the movie and its themes should simply just not watch the film. He clarifies that the movie “isn’t racist” and that African-American culture is also joked on.
Now that cancel culture has been active, they have often set their sights on the Wayans Brothers in part for White Chicks. But that clearly does not phase either Shawn or Marlon. When one Twitter user suggested that the Wayans Brothers were both “sexist and racist” for portraying white women, Marlon retweeted it and begged to be canceled. Wayans also promised that “more offensively hilarious” is on the way.
Talks have been brewing for a possible White Chicks 2 to come to pass. While currently on a press run for his comedy tour, Marlon Wayans stopped by Fox 5 DC, where he stated that he is interested in White Chicks 2 despite cancel culture. “My whole career has been based on being an equal opportunity offender,” said Marlon Wayans. The actor shared that many fans often praise him for the movie, especially “white chicks,” which he says is a “compliment.” “When you’re doing a joke, you want the people that you’re making fun of to laugh about it,” Marlon Wayans said.
This isn’t the first time the actor spoke about White Chicks 2 happening. Marlon Wayans talked about the timing during an interview with Variety and claimed it would be “necessary” to do now. Wayans told the publication that society is in need of “loosening up” and laughs in the state we’re in and claims the film would be a “juggernaut” for Hollywood.
Fans got excited in 2019 when one of the original film’s actors, Terry Crews, expressed that the sequel was officially happening during his Watch What Happens Live interview. Crews also claimed he’d been “working out for 15 years” for White Chicks 2. However, Marlon Wayans quickly shut the rumor down on Twitter and said there was still no deal in place. To date, there is still no official word of a White Chicks 2. But judging from Shawn and Marlon Wayans’ words, cancel culture won’t be able to stop it when it happens!
