Kirk Franklin’s family drama has been playing out in the media for some time now. The gospel icon is the father of Kerrion Franklin, a son who has been keen on dismantling his father’s brand for the better part of 2021. While the world knows Kirk as an ambassador of love and faith, Kerrion Franklin wants everyone to see his father as the controlling man he’s alleged has caused him physical and emotional harm throughout his childhood and adult life. Kirk Franklin recently stopped by The Real to talk about the ongoing issues with his son and how he chooses to love and remain positive over the drama.
While rumors of Kerrion’s mental health were circulating for a while, it was in March of this year that things became public. Kerrion and Kirk were engaged in a heated telephone exchange that Kerrion decided to record and release online to social media. In the phone conversation, his Grammy-winning father can be heard hurling words at Kerrion.
In the video, you can hear the “Stomp” legend tell his son, “I’ll put my foot in your a.” Other ‘promises’ were made on the muffled recording. Kerrion’s response to his father remarks? “I dare you!” Following the exchange, Kirk was forced to address their beef publicly, revealing that the family had been having a tough time with Kerrion for a while and struggling to find a middle ground.
Kerrion seemed to confirm this in his caption of the phone call video. Kerrion continued to double down in a series of posts continuing to “expose” his father following the phone call leak. In another post, Kerrion put his mother on blast as well, alleging that she tried to assault him while he was trying to retrieve his things from her home. He posted a video of them outside of their house and her asking him to stop while he told her police were on the way and that he’d been assaulted.
During a sit down with the ladies of The Real, Kirk opened up about the drama and how he is choosing to move forward despite his son’s allegations. He expresses that while Kerrion chose to expose him publicly, he will not do the same. Kirk says that parenting is hard enough as it is, and no parent should ever have their parenting put out there for people to criticize and mock.
The pensive father chose his words carefully as he expressed to Loni Love that he loves all four of his kids dearly. He understands that while what his son did was wrong, he still feels a responsibility to protect Kerrion. Kirk goes on to say that the issues are not complex and instead are very clear, but he still feels responsible for “covering” Kerrion. He mentions a few times that he will not reveal Kerrion’s “lifestyle,” alluding to Kerrion possibly living a life his father does not approve of.
