Janet Jackson also is the proud recipient of 11 American Music Awards. Five of which she won between the 1991 and 1992 shows. Jackson is a staple in American music, so it makes sense that the show would honor her so often. She’s won across several categories and was honored by the show over several years. In 2009 she took to the AMA stage to deliver an emotional performance of the songs “Scream” and “Together Again” for her brother Michael Jackson following his passing.

While Janet Jackson is one of the most decorated artists in pop history, she admits that she’s never cared much about the trophies. The humble icon has always been adamant about doing music her way on her own terms. Since she was born into show business, for her, the real drive is her love for creating and performing. As a result, Janet keeps all her awards in a warehouse and out of her house. She admits that Jermaine Dupri asked her to put her Grammys on display while they dated, but she promptly put them back after they split. Janet says that her son can have them once he’s old enough.
When asked by Essence Magazine if she ever got her just due as a writer, Janet says it is something she never thought about. It’s true most of her awards, accolades, and recognitions are for her contributions to the world as a dancer and music video artist. However, Janet Jackson has also been the author of all her hits, making her one of the most successful songwriters of all time too.
According to Jackson, the only real validation she needs these days is the joy of being a mother and seeing all the growth she’s made in life. “Being able to wake up and see my baby another day. The space I might be in at that moment within my soul. What I’ve accomplished within myself. How far I’ve come from that child there to the woman that I am today. That’s success.”
