After months of speculation, it appears Jennifer Hudson and rapper Common are indeed dating. The two music artists have known each other for many years and have always remained cordial. However, things turned romantic while Jennifer Hudson and Common were filming in Philly over the summer.

Last year was a massive year for Jennifer Hudson. The singer and actress became the 17th person to receive the prestigious EGOT status. She also launched her daytime Talk show, The Jennifer Hudson show, which has already been renewed for a second season. Common was one of the first individuals to shower Jennifer Hudson with love following the premiere of her talk show. Rumors surrounding Jennifer Hudson and Common dating began when the two were spotted together over the summer. According to close sources, Common and Jennifer Hudson became very close while filming their movie, Breathe, in Philadelphia.
The two music artists play romantic lovers in the Stefon Bristol directed film. Immediately after the news broke, social media began resurfacing a list of Common past relationships, suggesting Jennifer Hudson moves on and not waste her time. Rapper Common has been with many women in the entertainment industry, including Serena Williams, Angela Rye, Taraji P. Henson, and Erykah Badu.
Serena Williams and Common dated back in 2007. Their relationship would continue until 2010 off and on. Common opened up about his split from Serena Williams in October 2020, claiming he still has a lot of respect for the tennis player, but definitely single after Serena broke up with him. The rapper also appeared on The Meredith show, and discussed their relationship and how they were able to maintain a friendship.
“We have a great understanding and I care about her as a person,” the rapper stated. Serana would marry Alexis Ohanian in 2017 and has welcomed two children since then.
Common’s relationship was Erykah Badu was widely documented. The rapper once claimed he could not eat after his relationship with the singer ended. Common also said his relationship with Badu was the first time he really felt love in an adult relationship. “That was a point as an adult where I first felt like, ‘man, I’m in love,’ the rapper told Essence.
Erykah Badu also spoke on their relationship during a Breakfast Club interview. Badu suggested she attempted to break up with Common many times but he wouldn’t accept. The singer jokingly said it’s hard to break up with a light-skinned man. “It’s hard. They don’t get it. They don’t understand. They keep coming,” Badu stated.
Common briefly dated attorney and activist Angela Rye. They pair sparked relationship rumors in 2017 when they were spotted out together at the Creative Arts Emmys red carpet. Follow his win that evening, Rye did a post dedicated to her beau. Common spoke highly of her as well at the time, saying, “There’s a definite connection with Angela Rye. She’s a wonderful woman, I’m dating, I’m happy right now, and she’s an incredible human being.”
Unfortunately the duo would call it quits in 2020. OutLoud on FOXSoul broke the news that Angela and Common had some differences over children. Rye is believed to have wanted to start a family with Common, but he was not interested. While fans supported Common’s desire to not have children, they feel like it is something that should be establish before you start dating. “It’s nothing wrong with a person not wanting children. However, this so be established in the beginning so there is no misunderstandings,” commented one person. “Can’t have kids or don’t want kids is 2 different things. It makes sense to break up with someone over that,” said another.
Another successful actress who has been connected to Common is Taraji P. Henson. Henson and Common are rumored to have dated early in the 2000s. While she did not spill much information on their time together, she did confirm to Yahoo! in 2011 that they were an item briefly. “Okay I’ll tell you the truth, Common and I did date. All the rest no,” she told the site, refuting that she’d been with any other rappers outside of Common.
Common’s last public relationship was with comedian Tiffany Haddish, which ended abruptly. Haddish later called Common out for lying about why the relationship ended. She also claimed he might never settle down and poked fun at the rumor her ex-boyfriend was dating Common. In an Instagram post, the comedian shared a meme stating, “Men be like I’m finally ready to settle down and be in a relationship.”
Now fast forward to 2023, and it appears the rapper has settled down. This week Common and Jennifer Hudson took their relationship public when the two were spotted on a date at pupular hotspot, Nobu in Malbu. In the images that surfaced, Jennifer wore sweatpants and boots while Common sported a hoodie and brown pants.

In 2017, Jennifer Hudson ended her 10-year relationship with David Otunga. The former lovers share one child together.
