Jill Scott knows a thing or two about love. The neo-soul crooner has been back on the market for some time now but has two marriages behind her that she has learned from over the years. Let’s take a look at Jilly from Phillys relationship history.
Jill Scott was only a year into her career when she tied the knot with her first husband, Lyzel Williams. They had dated for seven years before making things official. Williams is a graphic designer and DJ. He and Jill said their vows in a private ceremony in Hawaii, and he was the inspiration behind her song “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat).” They would separate after six years. At the time, Jill said she’d noticed he stopped eating her food, a sign that there were issues between them. “He was pissed [off] for other reasons, but the best way to show me was by leaving what I’d made for him uneaten for days on the kitchen counter. It was a smack in the face.”
Jill would take another shot at love in 2008 with Atlanta drummer Lil Jon Roberts. She and Roberts quietly began dating, but the relationship hit the press when Jill got pregnant. They would welcome their son Jett Roberts in 2009 and call it quits only two months after. Jill was Roberts’s fourth baby mother. She told news outlets at the time, “We definitely love our son, and we are co-parenting and working on being friends. It is what it is.”
Jill would eventually relocate with her son to Tennessee in 2014, where she’s resided ever since. She began dating Mike Dobson around that time, and the two got married in 2016. The wedding included a performance from Big Daddy Kane and a set from DJ Mars. Several celebrities took to social media to wish Jill well, including Chance The Rapper, who called her “an inspiration.”
The wedding bliss did not last long, and by 2017 the couple was engaged in a bitter divorce. While they did not share any children, Dobson claimed he was forced into a prenup with Scott against his will and without a lawyer present. He went on to demand half a million from Jill Scott suggesting the singer owed him for pain and suffering. Jill alleged that Dobson had cheated on her and was abusive.
According to the Jasmine Brand, “The estranged husband said the prenup isn’t legal not only because he signed it under duress and without a lawyer, but also because Scott violated the agreement’s confidentiality clause by speaking to the media about the divorce.” When it was all said and done, the prenup was thrown out, but Scott got a restraining order issued so that Dobson could no longer speak to the press about their issues.
Scott took to social media afterward to reshare a post about red flags in relationships. With it, she elaborated on her non-negotiables going forward and how she demands to be treated by future partners. “Note – Your standards are not everyone else’s,” she told followers. “Lack of respect is a dry bobby. I prefer a juicy existence. Ya, dig?”
